28 May 2019 Andriy Muravskyi
All you wanted to know about MV Cargo terminal in Yuzhne but did not know whom to ask about it. Olexandr Molotov, Technical Director of the enterprise, tells about this.
In spite of the fact that a solemn opening of the grain terminal MV Cargo in Yuzhne will take place only on 6 September 2019, the enterprise is already functioning and has even processed over 6 million tonnes. We have visited the enterprise and learned what sort of works are being performed in the terminal, what volumes the company accounts for in the current season and what plans it has for the future.
Let us remind you that in the August 2015 Cargill, MV Cargo and SE “Administration of Maritime Ports of Ukraine” signed a trilateral memorandum on intentions to implement an investment project on construction of a grain terminal in the port “Yuzhnyi”. The total investment into the project reaches $150 million. MV Cargo will execute construction of the ground terminal complex, AMPU will provide for creation of a navigable operational water area of the quay No. 25 and a navigable approach channel to the quay No. 25. In the memorandum the intention by Cargill to acquire 51% of the terminal is fixed.

What is ready
“As of today the terminal is 92% ready. 14 bunkers are mantled in two lines with the capacity of up to 15 thousand tonnes of grain each. Warehouse for floor storage is one of the biggest ones in Ukraine, its capacity is up to 80 thousand tonnes of grain. The floor storage warehouse extends possibilities of the terminal allowing reloading various cargoes more efficiently and without any loss”.
Total volume of the terminal storage capacity is up to 290 thousand tonnes. Annual capacity is 5 million tonnes with a possibility of extension.
A solemn opening of the MV Cargo grain terminal will take place in Yuzhne on 6 September 2019
We shall start working on our own quay in July, now processing of permits for the terminal operations is under way. As of today the gallery is practically ready, the shiploader is assembled, starting-up and adjustment works are under way. Hopper scales are assembled, they undergo certification.
For the time being one laboratory is operating, the second one will be on the quay. In the terminal the block of drying unit, the block of grain cleaning unit, 4 truck unloaders are being assembled, the out row of bunkers is undergoig the programme of draught: a staged loading with a subsequent unloading”.

How loading is done now
“While the equipment is being assembled and the terminal works in a test mode, we still load ships with the grain accumulated. For nine months we have reloaded over one million tonnes. We have worked with milling and fodder wheat, and now we work mainly with maize.
Currently we work via TIS-Container terminal. Such loading reaches 30 thousand tonnes per day.
In future we plan to ship up to 40 thousand tonnes per day loading vessels of Panamax type at the own quay within one and a half – two days.
One shiploader is already assembled, starting-up and adjustment works for equipment are under way, software is being installed.
Capacity of the shipment line to a vessel of gallery is 2,000 tonnes per hour. There is a possibility to install one more line for shipment onto vessel and the second loader. If the second shipment line is available, we would be able to reach productivity of 4,000 tonnes per hour.
Аuto and railway logistics
“Usually up to 60-70% is received from rails and the rest from on-road transport. Of course, it depends on the season. We control limitations of trucks weight (gross weight maximum 45 tonnes). We do not have any trucks with overweight.
We use three railways, one for concurrent review, and two for unloading railway cars. We can process 300 railway cars per day. That would be an average productivity per day. Even now we receive up to 200 railway cars on one unloading line per day.
On the terminal there will be 6 tipping devices for trucks and one line for unloading dump trucks. On average we plan to receive not less than 500 trucks per day.
We consider a possibility to arrange a parking bay for trucks outside the terminal territory for up to 500 trucks. On the territory of the terminal there is a parking bay for 100 trucks. There are only the trucks which underwent concurrent review and await the results of analyses and unloading.
Meanwhile we work on introduction of JIT+ programme which allows to organize auto logistics. This way we will be able to receive data from drivers and understand where they are and in what time they will be able to arrive in the Terminal and so on. This programme will allow us to directly regulate the order of priority for calling trucks into the Terminal, avoid bad traffic on approach roads. JIT+ software is installed on the smartphones of drivers and it is already installed at the registration point for trucks in the terminal”.
